Pathfinder Recon provides reconnaissance imagery created for the IL-2 community. The process is highly automated: a complete set of annotated reconnaissance images can be produced in under one hour after receiving a fresh .MISSION file. This archive contains untouched source outputs, processed reconnaissance photographs, target-group annotations and complete downloadable packages. At present, the ZIP package contains the most complete Normandy dataset while the remaining archive sections continue to be populated over the coming days.The project remains a work in progress, with ongoing refinements. Because the process is automated, some compromises are inevitable, and feedback is welcome to help identify and correct errors.

How the archive is made

Methodology

Each reconnaissance photograph is produced from an automatically modified IL-2 mission adapted for automated aerial photography. A Python processing pipeline captures and combines four image tiles into a high-resolution composite. Mission data, workbook reference data covering priority targets and the supply-point model, and custom code are then used to orientate and prioritise target groupings before annotation. The annotation intelligence is still being refined. In its current form, the system is designed to present up to four target areas on any individual image. A current limitation is that the annotations are based on Day 1 data, representing targets before they have been attacked.

Image-based intelligence

A future computer-vision pipeline is being developed using a custom YOLO model. Its goal is to accept previously captured reconnaissance images, identify target groups directly from the picture, and produce the same style of annotated intelligence output without requiring the original mission file.
